INTO THE GROOVE!

I'm falling into a little bit of a wonderful pattern here...i couldn't be HAPPIER! After failing and struggling for so long (8 months), to have TWO successive days of CONTROL and SUCCESS....

For once, I'm speechless!...

REACHING OUT...FOILED AGAIN!
Today an 11 week initiative started over at http://www.rawfoodrehab.com/. There is really good energy over there, but the timing wasn't good for me to join their initiative. However, i've been trying to be more active there, trying to connect in a raw way.

Wouldn't you know, the TWO blog posts i added to the website...were deleted by the Admin! Not because something i said in them was wrong or offensive.

The first post i mistakenly added in the Admin area. It would have been nice for them to just repost it somewhere else for me. oh well.

And the 2nd post, i innocently added my blog address to the bottom of my post, not knowing it was illegal to do so, and the post was totally wiped away! The admin could have just wiped off the address, but they got rid of the whole post! They thought i was trying to SELL something!!!!

Oh well!! Try and try again! I'll give it another shot over there! Next time, i'll save what i write in case i screw up again and need to repost it!

But, the sheer act of reaching out over there seemed to help, even if no one even read it!

In fact, that's how i feel about THIS blog, too.

Even if no one reads it, it helps to write.

Things had gotten so bad for me with the eating and my weight the last few weeks/days, i even contemplated closing down the blog, as it didn't seem to be helping me, or anyone else, but after the storm clouds passed, there is light at the end of the tunnel again, so i'm happy it's still here for me, and a testament of my journey. Pure Raw Joy is one good outlet for me that hasn't slammed the door in my face... :-))

In fact, things may have gotten ALOT WORSE had it NOT been for the blog.

When i was 21, i lost 145 lbs....and gained them all back.

Yes, i've gained, i think about 65 lbs since last summer, but i didn't even gain HALF of the 175 lbs i lost back. Closer to 1/3. That may be horrible and shitty and really regretful, but, in all honesty, honest to God, it is PROOF that i am actually GETTING BETTER. I was able to re-establish control without having to gain EVERYTHING plus more back, like i have SO MANY times in my past.

I also contacted the RAW FOODS "WITCH" at http://www.rawfoodswitch.com/, asking her about possible raw coaching. Again, i haven't heard back from her, either, but reaching out helped. oh well!!!

Maybe the universe is trying to tell me something like, "MICHELLE, YOU CAN DO THIS ON YOUR OWN!"

I do tend to get a little nuts when i feel helpless turning this way and that way, pleading, "HELP ME!" I think that kind of desperation is sad and pitiful, and usually i probably wouldn't even be able to stick to whatever plan someone advised for me, ultimately. Finding my OWN way is probably the BEST way, afterall.

(And, the Eating Disorders Anonymous group i found out about online that met in my area also just stopped meeting, and the leader, who offered to SPONSOR me by email, also never wrote me back!!!! And you know what? I'm doing really well...ON MY OWN!!! And to tell you the truth, that the E.D. group/sponsorship didn't materialize is actually a BLESSING IN DISGUISE because eating 75% raw is probably frowned upon in those circles. I'm GLAD it didn't work out.)

EMOTION WAVES
I'm exhausted from my day with mom. For two days, she's been depressed and terribly angry.

She even said, "F.U." (mouthed it) to the Doctor today, and the same about the nurses.

Her meds are being lowered, and she's more and more awake and aware, and consequently, beginning to really realize that she's been in the hospital for a long time...and she's NOT happy about it, to say the least. It's been almost 8 weeks! Who would be?

Cliff and i "talked" to her today - you know, a "talk." "Mom, you're not happy about being in the hospital, right?..." and so on, encouraging her, listening to her (mouth words), trying to help her understand, help her discharge her emotions and feel better. I also tried to help her to understand that she was indeed getting better, but that since she was now more aware, she felt worse. She seemed to get it. And she was VERY interested to understand WHY she was in the hospital. What happened that i am here??? We tried to explain about the 2 surgeries, about the leaks, about why her belly hurts so bad.

Her drains have almost COMPLETELY stopped draining. This is WONDERFUL!! And she took 2 bowel movements today. PROOF that her bowel is beginning to function! Her belly was hurting her and she didn't understand WHY and she was embarrassed and upset she took 2 shits when the respiratory tech was there giving her a treatment.

I tell ya, ya need a PHD in psychology to get through this recovery. Emotionally, it very challenging. "Mommy, that's WONDERFUL you went to the bathroom!" It SCARED her.

For the first time, she tried to WRITE DOWN how she was feeling and what she wanted to communicate!!!! She was SO DETERMINED!!! Her little hands were shaking so, it was hard for her to get out a sentence. Her first declaration was, 'OUT.' "Mom, you want to go OUT...? You want to leave the hospital?" That question was met with a firm head shake in the affirmative and pleading, tearing eyes.

She had transitioned from angry to innocently pleading for help. She wanted Cliff and me to kidnap her OUT of the hospital behind the nurses backs! And she wanted us to whisper so the nurses wouldn't hear what we were talking about!

I can laugh about it now, but at the time, uy.

Her second communication was "STAY." The angry lady had turned back to vulnerable. I assured her i would be with her as long as she needed me.

Mom is presently having such mucous secretions coming up from her chest and out of her trache that she is FRIGHTENED she's going to choke! It is SCARY to watch and listen to. I can't imagine how scary it is for her. Yet, all of the nurses and doctors assure us that this is a normal part of her recovery. Sometimes things get WORSE before they get better. The mucous is actually BREAKING up and coming OUT of the trache. Lugers just flying right out and puddling on her chest. Gross, I KNOW. And mom doesn't believe it's 'normal', and is afraid to fall asleep, and is fearful that there is something dreadfully wrong with her.

If she only knew how bad she was BEFORE...how many times we thought was was going to DIE..., she might truly understand how much better she is. My poor little pathetic mommy. She's actually doing really WELL. She just doesn't BELIEVE it or SEE it. And, as for the phlegm, everyone is saying that it is good and normal and that it WILL stop, soon.

Mom also told me, fearing the worst, "My legs are numb!" She fears she is paralyzed! I said, "Mommy, here, look..." and i showed her that she can INDEED move her legs! They are just VERY WEAK and still somewhat SWOLLEN with fluid. There's nothing wrong with her legs, except that she hasn't used them for almost 8 weeks. She was so worried.

In a physical therapy session that morning someone had asked her to do something she felt she couldn't, and that really scared the pants off of her.

Fear is doing a number on my mommy right now.

But, to tell you the truth, I'm so glad we could help her WORK THROUGH it today. And, where she's at right now, emotionally, for me, is preferable to the ANGER. That was scary. She really looked like she hated me for two days. This is sad and pathetic, but HONEST and real and authentic.

Having her blow me kisses again today was so healing.

There was FEAR beneath all of the anger, and she got right down to the source today, finally.

We calmed her the best we could, and she was MUCH improved by the time we left, and as a matter of fact, she was strong enough then, emotionally, to suggest, "I'll be fine. Go home." Hours previously she was so scared to be alone, she wanted to be highjacked out of the hospital or to have me sleep over. When we left, she was settled with being IN the hospital and sleeping on her own. She had overcome ALOT today. Bravo, Ruth.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ I'm tellin' ya, i feel like a MOTHER and my mother is my CHILD. Her waves of emotion are heartbreaking, but fascinating to watch as they morph, grow stronger, or give way...
And i can really relate. Emotionally, i have gone through a 180 myself in just 2 days.

I am FEELING so much better than i was only days ago.

Days ago, i felt so utterly confused, "what do i do?" And worse than confused, HOPELESS.

Today i feel like i know what to do, and am doing it. As long as i can, one day at a time, stick to the little groove i've gotten myself into, i think i'm going to be okay. I like this new direction. One "meal" a day, be it cooked veggie or gourmet raw, i'm finding myself at ease with this new discipline. It feels like something i could really keep up.

And, because my food is better, emotionally and spiritually, i am feeling like a NEW PERSON. I don't feel depressed or hopeless at all anymore.

Do you think that's because i'm eating MUCH MORE RAW FOOD and it's alkeline properties are making me FEEL BETTER? Or do i feel better because i'm more in CONTROL? Or am i more in CONTROL because raw food is EASIER to control?

Whatever it is, i'm just GLAD!!!

xoxo michelle joy

INTO THE GROOVE!

FEELING BETTER FEELS BETTER...FOR TODAY

Life, behavior, emotions...can sometimes be so fascinating. One day you feel awful, you do awful. The very next day, something clicks internally...and you feel better, you do better, you have more hope, where just 24 hours ago, you felt hopeless.

I'm just grateful for the change. I feel better.

Come to think of it, i had quite a few sessions, where i laid my heart and my pain out to friends, loved ones, cried over feeling hopeless. Maybe that cleared a path to a brighter day? I even cried to God on several occassions.

So today is all good news. I didn't binge last night, again, but chose watermelon as a snack before bed, and took my Betaine and my D.E. All good things for myself. And ended up having a 75% raw day yesterday.

'Self Discipline' is my new reminder catch phrase to myself. When i feel like doing something bad (binge eating), i tell myself that i'm giving that up for today to be better and to be closer to myself and to God. It seems to be working.

A lovely person suggested on one of my recent posts that i read a christian book on overcoming binge eating, called, "THE DIET ALTERNATIVE" by Diane Hampton. Coincidentally, i believe i own that book. I know i've read it. As for it being a Christian book, I'm jewish, but i've always been open religiously. How could i not be, being a person with such uncontrollable desires. I've been searching my whole life for the 'answer,' no matter what religion it would come from.

Being reminded of the message of the book, to "give up" meals for "God" and for "righteousness" somehow makes sense to me. I've been feeling so hopeless...like, "somebody tell me what to do to stop eating and get back on track!" and the message of this book is just that: stop eating. I chuckle at the simplicity. The book suggests that very overweight people with binge eating eat only ONE meal a day, and the rest of the day FAST in honor of God and in honor of getting healthier and stopping the 'sin' of gluttony. This one meal should contain nothing 'diet,' but whatever you 'want.' Self deprivation the whole day to indulge in a meal of total pleasure. Interesting concept. David Letterman lost all of his excess weight doing this, eating one meal a day.

This concept somehow resonates with me - giving up food...for God, no matter what religion i am. I've been feeling very much like the raw all day is my way of doing just this - FASTING from cooked food for 3/4 of the day - for God and for me and for righteousness.

Even after one day, i feel better. Physically, emotionally and spiritually.

Cliffy and I had watermelon for breakfast out on the porch. We didn't even care that it was drizzling out :-))

We're heading out to visit my mom, and his mom, and then to the mall for a drizzly Saturday out together.

I packed a handy raw bag to get me through the morning, and am looking forward to a cooked vegan dinner. That seemed to work out really well yesterday, and i'm feeling a little groove trying to form: simple raw all day, cooked vegan dinner, fruit or yogurt as a nighttime snack.

In my bag today, i have 2 big bottles of green smoothie, 4 ears of raw corn, 8 nectarines and peaches. That oughtta hold me until dinner.

Blessings to you on your journey. Just remember, everyday is a new day and after you clear out the emotional muck, new hope arises.

More Positive Steps Forward :-))

Hi Folks,

I'm eating a banana/blueberry/raw cacao/cashew agave whip as we speak! :-)) I feel proud of myself for having chosen a raw snack tonight when i was hungry, instead of a cooked binge.

Truth be told, some days i feel so hopeless, but today, i had a little more gumption, and discipline in the raw direction won out. I'm happy. Yay!

MORE POSITIVE THINGS:
  • Mom is taking positive steps forward! She had a drain removed! The other drains have slowed way down! And they've stopped her anti-biotics! That's all good, meaning that the surgery site is HEALING and the bile is being directed through the bowel and not into the stomach and out into the drains. YAY!
  • Mom may get moved out of ICU in a few days!
  • I ate 75% raw today!
  • I had watermelon for breakfast, sitting on the porch, with Cliffy!
  • Last night I had only yogurt and fruit before bed...and no binge!
  • I bought more BETAINE HCL, took some last night, as well as my Diatomaceous Earth! They really help my reflux laryngitis (hoarseness from stomach contents refluxing into throat).
  • I worked on my new opera, Edgar, by Puccini! It's so pretty!
  • I made an appointment for a voice lesson!
  • I had a giant green smoothie for lunch today!
  • I had two raw corns for snack. Corn is so satisfying! It really took away that "empty" feeling.
  • For dinner, i had some of my favorite seitan selections from Whole Foods. (Man, oh, Man-o-schewitz, I can't stand it how much i love that stuff, mmm, mmm!) It seemed like a nice compromise of a day...mostly raw...with ultra satisfying cooked vegan dinner. So far, so good!
  • I had bad food thoughts today, and a desire to go out and binge (i was hungry), but I disciplined myself, and didn't listen to those voices, but made sensible choices...like EATING something healthy, instead of continuing the cycle. I guess that's really what it all comes down to - which voice are you going to listen to? - we all have a little ANGEL on one shoulder, and a DEVIL on the other. But, some days, i'm not strong enough, or aware enough to fight off my destructive impulses. Today, i was!
  • I got raw connected and wrote a long post at www.RawFoodRehab.com, but accidentally posted it in the wrong section, and it was erased by the Administration! Oh, well. At least, i reached out!
  • My cousin's wedding is in 9 days, but i stopped obsessing about losing weight for it! I'll go buy a dress that fits me now and make the best of it. I'm 'okay' just as i am. I accept me, for today, exactly where i'm at. And you know what? When you feel BETTER about yourself...and forgive yourself..., you automatically DO better.

LOVE YOURSELF!! FORGIVE YOURSELF! And just do the best you can.

POSITIVE STEPS FORWARD!

Morning, from HOT 'N SWEATY Philly :-)) It's been over 100 degrees here the last few days.

But, i digress...i only want to talk about POSITIVE things today!

  • Mom is doing better!
  • They removed the tube from her nose!
  • She's been off of the ventilator for 3 nights and 4 days so far, breathing on her own now!
  • She's calm and not "psychotic" anymore!
  • I read to her daily from a yiddish book, and she smiles!
  • She loves when i exercise her legs!
  • I took Diatomaceous Earth last night!
  • I took my Betaine last night!
  • I've been practicing my new aria!
  • I'm singing a new opera in October!
  • I'm studying the score to my new opera, "Edgar" by Puccini
  • I worked on the Arnolds Way newsletter this morning!
  • I slurped a chug of Noni Juice last night and this morning!
  • I had a good chat with my friend, Jan, about how i'm doing, and it made me feel better!
  • Jan has a lot of faith in me and thinks i'm resilient! :-)) That means alot!
  • I contacted a friend of mine, a colonic therapist, who helps people cleanse! I'll call her at 3pm today to talk about a visit to her local spa.
  • I drank a raw fruit smoothie this morning!
  • I'm going for a water walk, while Cliff washes his car!
  • Two of our tomatoes are turning RED! We love our babies and can't wait to EAT them!

HAPPY JULY 4TH :-)) IF WE COULD TALK TO THE ANIMALS...WHEN MOM CAN TALK...HEARING FROM NICK

Happy July 4th! Are you doing something fun today?

Did you do anything fun yesterday? Gettysburg, PA never materialized for us. After visiting mom, we determined it was too long of a trip to make since we wanted to get back to her for a 2nd visit.

We had a fun time, though, and ended up visiting the Lehigh Valley Zoo, located on the 1200-acre Trexler Nature Preserve in Schnecksville, PA.
We saw so many different kinds of owls, hawks, birds. We saw camels and ibexes, otters. And, the cutest penguins! Man, did i want to get in the water with the penguins! It was a scorcher out yesterday and it's going to be even hotter here in Philly today.

The ostrich was my favorite and so freaky deaky... It kept moving it's giant skinny neck around and staring it's tiny little "smiling" face right into mine...with those big eyes...it was like watching some kind of space creature...like E.T., looking right at me. Really amazing. I'll never forget it. And talk about ugly feat! They're prehistoric looking with two giant toes.

Guess what, ostriches are mainly vegetarians. The diet of the Ostrich mainly consists of plant matter, though it also eats insects.

That got me thinkin' about the bonobo, who is supposed to be our closest cousin. According to wikipedia, bonobos don't eat just a vegetable, fruit, and insect diet as I had believed. They eat meat! I thought the bonobo was a frugivore! Chimps, i found out, are omnivores. Gorillas seem to have the closest diet to what raw foodists hope to acheive. "The DNA of gorillas is 98%–99% identical to that of a human, and they are the next closest living relatives to humans after the two chimpanzee species. Gorillas are herbivores, eating fruits, leaves, and shoots. Further they are classified as foliovores. Much like other animals that feed on plants and shoots, they sometimes ingest small insects as well (however there has been video proof that gorillas do eat ants and termites much in the same way as chimpanzees.) Gorillas spend most of the day eating. Their large sagittal crest and long canines allow them to crush hard plants like bamboo. Lowland gorillas feed mainly on fruit while Mountain gorillas feed mostly on herbs, stems and roots." http://www.wikipedia.org/ Victoria Boutenko talks about the bonobo's diet being our ideal, but since they eat meat, i think it's really the gorilla's diet, we should attain to. But, it seems ALL of the monkeys eat insects. Maybe we should, too?

Anyway, no chimps, or gorillas at the Lehigh Valley Zoo. It's a small zoo. But, what's neat about the LVZ is how up close and personal you can get. You can get right up close to the animals to really admire them. I never realized the coat of a penguin is so feathery and slippery. And ostrich feathers really do look like they would make good feather dusters! And, gosh, penguins are so cute, you just wanna hold one and squeeze it!

You feel kinda bad all of the animals are all holed up like that, instead of out in nature, but, Cliff and I have always supported zoos, believing that ultimately they do help preserve animals in the wild. We feel sad they're in gated boxes as 'homes', and not able to roam free, but we've always hoped, ultimately, that zoos strive to help animals, and that zoos bring awareness, and awareness to preserving wildlife.

Zoos also bring alot of money...for themselves...but isn't it like anything? Everything is a business.

~ ~ ~ ~

Speaking of businesses where people are holed up, ala hospitals...

Mom is doing well, but my heart breaks constantly for her. I cry alot. And the truth is, i miss her, too, terribly. I want my old mommy back. This is emotionally very, very painful for me. She is doing well, better, but she is so weak and frail and vulnerable. Her little hands shake, and her head shakes when i hold her head away from the pillow to brush it. I think about that and i start to cry, again.

Cliff keeps saying for me to keep my chin up.

She is weaning daily for the entire day off the ventilator. That's huge improvement. Her lungs are getting stronger and stronger. And they fit her with a new smaller sized trache. That's progress forward, as well.

I still can't help but feel enormous amounts of sadness for her situation. She does make small improvements everyday, but still, she's been in the hospital for almost 7 weeks, and she has probably AT LEAST, another 8-12 more to look forward to. Maybe even longer, including rehab.
Her drains from the surgery site (her bowel) are still draining. One has stopped completely. The other 4 are still flowing. When they change color to lighter and clearer, we'll know the bowel has begun to seal up on it's own where it had sprung a leak. How long that will take no one knows.

She's still being fed intraveniously. She is too weak to walk.

And her eyes don't look clear to me. I'm concerned about that. I keep telling the nurses.

Her swelling has gone down significantly.

She seems more coherant, which is good. That crazed psychosis stage seems to have improved somewhat, although they are giving her something called Halidol to help her relax when she starts to get 'rammy.'

Perhaps next week, she can start talking. They'll put a cap over the trache and she'll be able to make sound. I think she will be less confused then, having people be able to understand her, and being able to communicate again.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

I ate raw fruits and veggies 3/4 of the day, yay, then a salad for dinner, and some cooked snacks later. Not perfection as i had hoped to achieve, but, you know what? Under the circumstances, it was the best I could do. I am pretty much an emotional basket case, i am realizing.

I realized last night, in the kitchen, looking for comfort food, just how much comfort i need. I ought to find new ways of comforting myself. Cliff was sleeping early so i couldn't cuddle up to him. Maybe i oughta get out one of my stuffed animals.

I think the most i can do is manage the situation and just keep getting back up on that horse daily, and do the best i can, and not give up. Watermelon for breakfast time!

INSPIRATION/ATTITUDE of GRATITUDE
I hope you liked those videos of Nick. I think he's probably the most inspiring person i've ever come across.

On the one hand, i keep telling myself to cut myself a break with the food, "i'm doing the best i can," and on the other hand, I just have to do better. I have a wedding to attend in 2 weeks, I'm singing in the raw festival in about a month and a half, I'm starting up singing lessons again and my voice is never better than when i eat raw, I'm singing a new opera in October, and have my class reunion in October. I gotta do this for me. I refuse to let this snowball roll any further.

I wanna be back to the ME i used to know.

"What do you do when you fall down? You get up." Nick Vujicic

Hearing somebody like Nick say that brings those words whole new, deeper meaning.

By the way, i think he's totally sexy-cute-hot, and I've wondered how he gets his beard so nice, and assumed that someone grooms it for him, daily. Watching this next video made me realize i am probably deeply mistaken.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DxlJWJ_WfA

I'm Jewish, but this Christian stuff always inspires me. Cheese 'n Crackers, if Nick can do ALL of that for himself, how can i ever feel sorry for myself, and not do what i need to for myself?

Cliff reiterates the message, "Look at your mom laying like that all day. That's why you have to be GRATEFUL you can do what you can do."

Don't start your day without being inspired, people. I'm glad i'm starting my day off better now. Attitude of gratitude. If Nick can shave his own face, i can get back on the horse and eat my fruits and veggies.
